PORTLAND -- A Portland surgeon is under investigation by Australian medical authorities who refer to him as Dr. Death.

PatelDr. Jayant Patel recently fled Queensland after 14 of his patients either died or suffered serious complications. He returned to his home in northwest Portland and is reportedly practicing medicine.

In the 1990s, Patel's license was amended by the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners so that he was prohibited from performing certain surgeries. The move came after three of his patients died from post-operative complications.

The Oregon cases led to four civil lawsuits against Patel and at least two against Kaiser Permanente.

Problems in Oregon prompted the New York State Board of Professional Misconduct to revoke his license to practice there.
